It's the Little Things That Count - Five Reasons Skaters Should Practice Basic Skating

Young figure skater with black hair in a ponytail is dressed in all black with white skates. She is practicing gliding on a backward outside edge with the free leg extendedPracticing basic skating skills
I’ve been observing skating progress accounts on social media over the past couple of years, and I’ve noticed how much focus there is on “achieving” new tricks.

I haven’t asked why, but I have a hunch it’s the same reason younger skaters and parents fixate on new jumps…

  • Landing a new jump feels like a more tangible measure of progress than power, edge quality, or carriage.
  • New jumps are more recognizable than incredible skating skills, and in some ways, easier than beautiful carriage.
  • The brain thinks it’s working hard if you just keep at it–sweating and grunting, jumping and falling.
  • Social media applauds you when you show how hard of a skill you’re working on–each harder jump or spin is like an imaginary milestone.

Seasoned coaches will agree, though, that it’s even more important to practice the “simple” stuff.

Below are five reasons why.

    Author // the skating yogi

My name is Sarah Neal. I have been immersed in the world of figure skating for over four decades. I have seen firsthand the abuse that happens at the higher levels of our sport and experienced how that trickles down into unhealthy training practices and habits at the grassroots. I have seen this play out in the operations of the very institutions that control our sport.  Whether for a profession or hobby, pursuing skating should be a joyful, rewarding process, an opportunity for athletic and personal growth, and a place to build lasting friendships.

Following the framework of Patanjali's 8 limbs of yoga and my unique application of the 8 limbs to the skating journey, I help skating folks of all ages learn to train smarter, skate better, and enjoy the process. The Skating Yogi offers space and support to help you, through yoga, release harmful conditioned beliefs and habits to let a new path unfold, leading you to true connection and contentment.  Ditch the comparisons and begin to connect with your true self and to a new kind of skating journey.
